What We Did To Each Other

Available September 30th, 2025!

Yesenia Rivera is ugly.

Or, at least she thinks so. A teenage Latina suffering through high school, every day of her life she experiences humiliations from a society that devalues her hair, skin, eyes, and language. Thus, when she receives the opportunity to move to a new city, she conjures a plan to remake herself completely. She conjures a plan to pass herself off as white.

Guillermo Rivera grows up in the same society as Yesenia, but he responds to his devaluation in a different way; he begins to sell drugs and hang out with a bad crowd, believing it the best way to assert himself in an unjust world.

When Guillermo meets a—unbeknownst to him—white-passing Yesenia, he begins to suspect that he and the new blond girl in class have much more in common than a last name. And as Yesenia navigates her two selves—one latin, one white—she realizes the implications of her actions are much heavier than she anticipated. Linking these two is a shared, forgotten past that Guillermo is threatening to uncover, and one which Yesenia is willing to hide, by any means necessary…

For readers that like their stories to satisfy in a different way, “What We Did To Each Other” is a novel that explores the complications of culture, language, aesthetics and class. Pre-order your copy below, and subscribe to the newsletter to stay in the loop!
